Wednesday 28th October Book Club Storytelling From new writers in Edinburgh, come and share and listen to stories and poetry in The Bowery Book Room 7.30pm £FREE
Thursday 29th October Ballboy // eagleowl // So Cow // Local Living Guy Ballboy are 3 boys and 1 girl from Edinburgh in Scotland. They have been making brilliantly earnest and moving songs since since November 5 1999. John Peel was a big fan, which is as ringing an endorsement as possible. Eagleowl make gorgeously understated post-folk music that envelops you in warm fuzziness, and allows you to drift off into a melancholy, untroubled state of consciousness. Their gentle harmonies and groaning strings combine to create a set of atmospheric slow burners which The Scotsman almost perfectly described as "the soundtrack to the saddest, most beautiful art-house film you've never seen After 3 self-released albums on cd, an E.P on Irish micro-label Rusted Rail and a single on Californian punk rock imprint Going Underground, So Cow (a.k.a Brian Kelly) this year brought out his inaugural long player. 'So Cow' is a compilation of the best of Brian's early recordings, released on Tic Tac Totally records, home of San Diego lo-fi surf pop fiend Wavves and garage rock noiseniks The Test Patterns. Mastered by Bob Weston of Shellac and Mission Of Burma, the record synthesises influences of The Clean, Pavement and Television Personalities with Brian's idiosyncratic songwriting voice. He has played all over Ireland and parts of Britain, toured the U.S and Canada, and is big in South Korea (really: he sometimes sings in Korean too), and shared bills with Pants Yell, Dreamdate, Nodzz and Deerhoof. Praise has included having a song ('Shackleton') described by Pitchfork as being "equally perfect for Death Cab fans' mixtapes, Belle and Sebastian fans' weddings, and closing-credit sequences for Chuck Palahniuk film adaptations", and being the favourite new band of Peggy from The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Definitely not to be missed. Local Living Guy: Kieran Curran began recording both listenable and willfully unlistenable ditties on 4 track in 2005. After circulating tapes and cds amongst his friends, he began playing live in 2007, mainly around his home town of Galway on the west coast of Ireland and mainly solo. In summer 2008, he supported Jeffrey Lewis and Dufus, and has played sporadic gigs of ramshackle, noisy indie pop (and occasional anti-folk) in Dublin, London and Edinburgh. Lately, he plays with Brian (So Cow) on drums and Laura (Renmore Brass Band) on bass when they're in the same city together. Luckily, this time they are. 7.30pm £5

Wednesday 11th November Since discovering that the evolutionary peak of human existence came at the exact moment that the 1985 Huey Lewis & The News live concert was burned to laser disc, The Pineapple Chunks have been trying to create a vortex through the Bathtub, beyond the whirlpool of the Ever Shrinking Spiral of hairy water and onto the clean area next to the slightly dirty area around the light swich. We dont know exacly what actually happened after that, so like, totally, whatever. 4/5 - "one of Edinburgh's most maverick and free spirited guitar based bands" - The List "bloody good" - Song, by Toad "The Pineapple Chunks have got something really different going on in their style. They don't sound like any other band Limbo's come across in Scotland, let alone Edinburgh, and they're all the more interesting for it, ploughing their own, individual furrow. It's hard to pin this down in any way, except to say it's pretty trippy" - Black Spring DJs/Limbo 7.30pm £5

Saturday 14th November Indie/Folk/Pop from Toronto, Canada tours with the album Nice, Nice, Very Nice. Titled in reference to a Kurt Vonnegut poem, Nice, Nice, Very Nice was recorded in Toronto in fall 2008 under the creative eye of producer John Critchley (Elliott Brood, 13 Engines, Holy Fuck, Hidden Cameras). Dropping in to add their talents were such hero Canadian artists as Justin Rutledge, Veda Hille, Mark Berube and members of Elliott Brood, Said The Whale, Mother Mother, Major Maker and Small Sins. There is a raw rootsiness to Nice, Nice, Very Nice that touches on aspects of indie-pop. There are a number of toe-tappers amid his trademark lamentations and, though it’s mellow at times, what Mangan has to offer isn’t overly precious or delicate. Mangan has toured Canada, the UK, USA and Australia numerous times. He has showcased at Canadian Music Week, South-By-South-West, North-By-North-East, The Great Escape (UK), MusExpo (LA), Big Sound (AUS), Western Canadian Music Awards, Transmission and COCA. Dan’s debut album has kept him on the move with opportunities. Record deals in Canada (FUM) and Australia (ABC/Warner) were accompanied by invitations to showcase at festivals around the world. Britain’s NME magazine featured him as one of Canada’s most promising acts. Back home, he has become a darling of the CBC. Gaining respect amid his peers, he has shared stages with Patrick Watson, The Acorn, Elliott Brood, Said The Whale, Ohbijou, Arkells, Hey Rosetta!, Mother Mother, and has collaborated with spoken word artists such as Ivan Coyote and the internationally renowned Shane Koyczan. Mangan weaves unique lyrical phrases that simply and subtly unfurl complicated ideas. He delivers them with his signature graveled vocals and understated humour. He doesn’t lean on ironic instruments or gimmicks. Somehow, it all just works. Dan stands up and people get quiet. They listen. More and more people all the time. With support from Thomas Western who had is debut at the Bowery in October with an acoustic set in the bar and the praise hasn’t stopped coming in. We’re looking forward to hearing him plugged in this time! 7.30pm £5

The Baw starts rolling at The Roxy Art House in Edinburgh on the 21st of November. Live bands over two stages with DJs and other activities across the venue. Acts confirmed include the The Real Tuesday Weld, Aberfeldy, The Parsonage, Withered Hand, Come On Gang!, Big Ned, Benni Hemm Hemm, Little Eskimos, Paul Vickers (DJ set), Pictish Trail (DJ set), On The Fly (DJ set) & Vic Galloway (DJ set). Optional Fancy Dress: Ball Boys and Belles of the Ball Come on Gang! Indie inspiration. Get past the novelty that drummer Sarah Tanat Jones also sings lead vocals and witness the ample skills on show from this Edinburgh power pop trio and you’ll concede this is no gimmick. We assume sublime singles ‘Wheels’ and ‘Start the Sound’ are only the start of it all. (The List) Big Ned. We are Big Ned. We are Doom 'n' Roll.
We are a band from Glasgow. We like slow bluesy Rock music and we like Country and Western. We like David Lynch movies. We love dark Americana. We love trance. We think three chords are two too many. The single "Bad Angel" b/w "Killer" and the album "Big Ned" are out on Optimo Music. Get them at all good record shops, or if you must, iTunes etc. They look good, sound good, and make you look and sound good. Benni Hemm Hemm: Blessed with living in the vodka-pickled tundra's of 21st Century Iceland, Benedikt H. Hermannsson has a rich cultural heritage to call upon - with the contemporary musical success of Sigur Ros, Múm and Bjork. Opening through a rattle of percussion and thrumming acoustic guitar, the appropriately titled 'Beginning End' kicks off Benni Hemm Hemm's eponymous debut with the kind of dribble-inducing enthusiasm usually reserved for kid's birthday parties. Brimming with indie-guitar goodness, things are cranked up a gear with the introduction of parping horns, soaring strings and a batch of sugar-blasted atmospherics that brings to mind the joyous exuberance of the Arcade Fire. 'I Can Love You In A Wheelchair', meanwhile, is an ebbing folk song that matches the likes of The Tindersticks in its blunt yet heartfelt predilection - taking a difficult subject then injecting it with a solipsistic wit that is caustically effective. Elsewhere, 'Til Eru Fræ' presses the glottally rich language into action for a galloping charge through Icelandic-country, the steel guitar pock-marks of 'Fight' hint at a fog-shrouded desert, whilst 'Sweaty In The Sunshine' works up a real head of steam through percussive bursts that press the whole band into frenzied action. Brilliant stuff. (Boomkat) Little Eskimos: Borne of imagination found in some amateur CD-Rs made for the fun of it, Little Eskimos have crawled out their igloos to timidly take steps in the burgeoning world of the Scottish rock scene. Playing on the T Break stage at T in the Park this year, these five lads from central Scotland have already carved their own fishing hole into the ice that stands between ignored creativity and Jo Whiley-approved success. And it's all done with with music that mixes traditional acoustic charm, blasting indie and the blips and blobs of 21st century electronica. (The List) Tickets are £10 - that includes entry to the Roxy Room where the other bands (Withered Hand, The Parsonage, Aberfeldy, The Real Tuesday Weld) will be playing and The Bar where we have Vic Galloway, On The Fly, The Pictish Trail and Paul Vickers lined up for DJ sets. 7pm £10
Wednesday 25th November Book Group New writers present their newest work in the book room of The Bowery 7.30pm £5
Friday 27th November Foxgang EP Launch with support from White Heath Foxgang are an international 4-piece based in Edinburgh/Glasgow. The band has its roots across the Baltic in Krakow, Poland, where Foxgang formed and spent 2 years gigging and attracting media attention from national press and radio. Foxgang's music is ravaged, cosmic rock 'n' roll, characterised by frontman Ryan Denton's deft lyrics and soulful vocals. Despite building club wrecking following, in autumn 2007 it was most definitely time to take the Brit- words and sounds to the UK and seek a more relevant exposure. Since arriving in Scotland Foxgang has received airplay from Jim Gellatly on XFM, bbc 5, 6 , BBC special Podcasts, packed out Edinburgh's HMV picture house and London’s Dublin Castle. Look out for shows in Glasgow's Subway Festival and Alan McGee’s Death Disco in London as Foxgang continue to blow audiences away with their stunning live performances. Foxgang’s white trainers only touch the stage half the time. White Heath are a unique Edinburgh based five-piece band who draw upon a wide range of styles, traditions and instrumentation to create an exciting and involving live experience. 7.30pm £5 |
